U.S. Meat Output Lags Year Ago

WASHINGTON - Mar 26/10 - SNS -- Commercial red meat for the United States came in at 3.74 billion pounds in February, down 2% from the 3.83 billion pounds produced in February 2009, according to this USDA statistics.

Beef production, at 1.96 billion pounds, was 2% below the previous year. Cattle slaughter totalled 2.55 million head, up 1% from February 2009. The average live weight was down 25 pounds from the previous year, at 1,285 pounds.

Veal production totalled 10.7 million pounds, 2% below February a year ago. Calf slaughter totalled 74,000 head, down a little from February 2009. The average live weight was down 10 pounds from the previous year, at 247 pounds.

Pork production totalled 1.76 billion pounds, down 3% from the previous year. Hog kill totalled 8.69 million head, down 3% from February 2009. The average live weight was down 2 pounds from the previous year, at 270 pounds.

Lamb and mutton production, at 12.3 million pounds, was down 3% from February 2009. Sheep slaughter totalled 178,400 head, 1% below last year. The average live weight was 139 pounds, down 3 pounds from February a year ago.
