Politics Remains Factor in Indian Pulses

VANCOUVER - Feb 24/10 - SNS -- India's winter or rabi season pulse harvest looks like it will make up for all the reduction in last fall's summer or kharif crop harvest.

Prospects for a larger rabi crop have already had an impact on local markets in India, with markets expected considerable harvest selling pressure. However, there seems to be a strong belief that as the harvest slows, prices will recover.

This view reflects underlying tension in the politics surrounding food in India. As much as the government wants to see large crops and low prices to consumers, local traders argue rabi season grain crops forecasts are overstated and that an inefficient food distribution infrastructure results in higher food prices than might otherwise be the case.
