India May Extend Pulses For Poor Scheme

NEW DELHI - Feb 16/10 - SNS -- The Indian government may continue to subsidize the sale of imported pulses to provincial governments for distribution to India's poor, through the end of the 2010-11 fiscal year.

Under the scheme, pulses are sold to the poor at a cost of 10 Rupees per kilogram or U.S. $218 per metric ton (MT). Extending the policy would allow imported pulses to be sold through the public distribution system at subsidized prices alongside domestically grown product, with losses covered by the government.
