India Wrapping Up Rabi Seeding

VANCOUVER - Feb 15/10 - SNS -- With initial rabi season harvest activity starting in India, seeding of the winter crop is wrapping up, with total land in pulses rising over last year as land in grains and oilseeds declines.

The country's agriculture department reports, "Data received from States reveal that about 27.781 million hectares wheat has been sown compared to last year’s coverage of 27.589 million hectares.

"Higher area coverage of wheat is reported in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Less coverage has been reported in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir."

About 3.235 million hectares of rice has been sown/transplanted compared to last year’s coverage of 3.252 million. Rice area has been diverted for pulses crops in Andhra Pradesh. However, rice area is expected to reach last year’s area coverage as sowing/transplanting is still going on.

Oilseeds have been sown in less area as compared to last year, by 480,000 hectares.
