Lentils Firm in Good Trade

VANCOUVER - Apr 25/09 - SNS -- International lentil markets maintained a firm tone against relatively brisk trading in both spot and new crop shipping positions during the past week.

Markets were also supported by the seeding intentions report from Statistics Canada. While interest in the crop is believed to have grown considerably since farmers were surveyed about their plans in March, the numbers will provide underlying strength over the short term.

Uncertainty over the size of this year's red lentil crop in Turkey is lending some support to the thoughts of market bulls. Some buyers are waiting for firmer news on the status of the Turkish crop before covering additional needs for the coming quarter.
