Peanut Stocks Remian High

WASHINGTON - May 30/02 - STAT -- Peanut stocks in the United States continue to run well ahead of year earlier levels, with the latest USDA data showing there are 2.90 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock on hand, compared to 1.91 billion pounds as of April 30 last year.

Included in the total are 1.72 billion pounds of actual farmer stock.

Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 1.11 billion pounds of farmer stock equivalent. Roasting stock totaled 62.8 million pounds. There were 608 million pounds of Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of April 30, 2002.

Shelled peanut stocks totaled 838 million pounds of which 818 million pounds were edible grades and 20.4 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type included 174 million pounds of Virginias, 606 million pounds of Runners, and 37.7 million pounds of Spanish.

April millings totaled 377 million pounds. Millings by type were 70.3 million pounds of Virginias, 306 million pounds of Runners, and 296,000 pounds of Spanish.

Commercial processors utilized 126 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during April. Utilization by type were 70.2 million pounds for all peanut butter products, 28.3 million pounds for peanut candy, and 26.2 million pounds for snack peanuts. Crushing for oil and cake and meal totaled 48.8 million pounds during the month.

Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 1.59 million pounds of peanut butter and 33,264 pounds of roasted peanuts during April.

Stocks of treated seed on hand April 30, 2002 totaled 28.9 million pounds, compared with 8.10 million pounds on March 31, 2002. Of the April total, 7.21 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 20.8 million pounds were Runners, and 857,000 pounds were Spanish. March stocks of treated seed included 3.00 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 5.09 million pounds of Runners, and 4,000 pounds of Spanish.
