Free Crop Insurance for Food Aid Crops

EDMONTON - May 30/02 - SNS -- Alberta crop producers who have committed the production from 3,200 acres of crops grown this year to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank will not have to pay for crop insurance from Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC).

"Over the years, many Albertans have embraced the work of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank by donating land, seed, chemicals, equipment and labor," said Shirley McClellan, Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. "AFSC is pleased to help protect the investment made by volunteers and other organizations by providing hail insurance free of charge."

Mary Thompson, Alberta/B.C. Coordinator of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, said, "Our volunteer farmers appreciate the protection and security this provides as we all work together to help those around the world less fortunate than ourselves."

Local growing project coordinators can apply for hail insurance at any AFSC insurance office in the province.
