Farm Bill Benefits Organic Too

WASHINGTON - May 21/02 - SNS -- The controversial farm bill recently signed by President George Bush includes provisions for America's small organic farming industry.

Monies allocated towards organic farming include $15 million for research, $5 million for reducing certification costs, and exemptions from federal marketing orders for growers who produce 100% organic.

The Organic Research Initiative is managing the research funds, and is spending it over a period of five years at $3 million. It expands the organic agriculture research and extension initiative to include on-farm research and development for working organic farms, determination of desirable traits for organic commodities, and identification of marketing and policy constraints on the expansion of organic agriculture.
