OTTAWA - May 8/02 - STAT -- Canadian egg production continued its year over year increases during March, with egg output rising 2.3% over year earlier levels to 48.6 million dozen, according to the latest data available from Statistics Canada.
This lifted calendar year to date output to 143.5 million dozen eggs, 3.1% above the 139.2 million dozen produced during the opening quarter of the 2001 calendar year.
One anomaly with the March egg production data was that production in March was significantly lower than the January totals. During the previous four years, March egg production was normally higher and in the other year it was lower, the difference was only 111,0000 dozen eggs. This year, March output is 1.3 million dozen below January's production levels.
In releasing the egg production data, Statistics Canada noted poultry meat production in March was slipped 1.7% below year earlier levels to 88 million kilograms or roughly 193.6 million pounds.
