Pea, Lentil, Chickpea Output Advances 38%

WASHINGTON - Sep 12/22 - SNS -- Combined production of lentils, chickpeas and peas in the United States is up 38% over last year, advancing from around 970,500 to 928,200 metric tons (MT), well below the previous five year average of 1.345 million MT.

The USDA also revised seeded area, saying land in peas totalled 917,400 acres, down from its June estimate of 969,000. By contrast, lentil plantings were pegged at 670,000 acres, compared to the June estimate of 606,000; while the chickpea area inched up from 343,200 to 349,000 acres based on additional surveys of growers since June.

The advances in output over last year improve the domestic supply situation for these crops, but the it seems likely the United States will remain a relatively important destination though the total quantity imported is expected to be down sharply from last season.
