WASHINGTON - Sep 12/22 - SNS -- All cotton production is forecast at 13.8 million 480-pound bales, up 10% from the previous forecast but down 21% from 2021, according to the USDA's latest production forecast.
Based on conditions as of September 1, yields are expected to average 843 pounds per harvested acre, down 3 pounds from the previous forecast but up 24 pounds from 2021.
Upland cotton production is forecast at 13.4 million 480-pound bales, up 10 percent from the previous forecast but down 22 percent from 2021. Pima cotton production is forecast at 460,000 bales, up 13 percent from the previous forecast and up 39 percent from 2021.
Acreage updates were made in several States based on a thorough review of all available data. Area planted to Upland cotton is estimated at 13.6 million acres, up 11% from the previous estimate and up 23% from 2021. Upland harvested area for the Nation is expected to total 7.71 million acres, up 11% from the previous forecast but down 24% from last year.
Pima cotton planted area is estimated at 169,000 acres, up 8% from the previous forecast and up 34% from 2021. Expected Pima harvested area at 164,500 acres is up 8% from the previous estimate and up 33% from last year. If realized, Upland harvested area for Texas will be the lowest on record.
Ginnings totaled 507,200 running bales prior to September 1, compared with 199,750 running bales ginned prior to the same date last year.
