Competition Affecting Chickpeas

PANAMA - Jan 21/22 - SNS -- International chickpea were somewhat easier during the past week, reflecting solid competition for available demand among the various origins.

In several destinations Russia has become a potent competitor, while indications India has increased land in kabuli as well as desi chickpeas has generated some concern it will become a factor in markets By February or March.

Given the pase of seeding in the country, the final area in all types of chickpeas should reach at least 11.636 million hectares, compared to 11.2 million by the same time last year. Average yields have the potential to boost total output from 11.99 to 12.19 million metric tons (MT).
