Smaller U.S. Chickpea Crop No Surprise

PANAMA - Jan 14/22 - SNS -- Chickpea markets were not surprised by the past week's updated production estimates for the United States.

In its final crop report for 2021, the USDA said output of all classes of chickpeas dropped from around 185,400 to just under 129,800 metric tons (MT), down from the September forecast of a 137,600 MT crop.

Average yields were a record low 776 pounds per seeded acre because of drought conditions in the main growing areas. Last year's yields came in at 1,608 pounds and during the previous five years they averaged 1,457 pounds.
