Canola Output Down, But 7th Biggest

WASHINGTON - Jan 12/22 - SNS -- Canola production in the United States in 2021 was estimated at 2.72 billion pounds, down 21% from 2020 but still represents the seventh largest total on record for the Nation, according to the USDA's final crop report for 2021.

The average yield, at 1,302 pounds per acre, is down 629 pounds from last year's average and is the lowest since 2007. Planted area was estimated at 2.15 million acres, 18% above the previous year's acreage. Harvested area, at 2.09 million acres, was up 17% from 2020. Both the planted and harvested area are the highest on record for the Nation.

Production in North Dakota, the leading canola-producing State, was estimated at 2.30 billion pounds. This was a decline of 21% from 2020 but still represents the seventh largest production for North Dakota on record. Planted and harvested area in North Dakota were up 16% and 15%, respectively, from 2020 and both were record highs.

Planted area in Montana and Washington for 2021 were both record highs. A record high yield was estimated in Oklahoma, while a record low yield was estimated in Washington.
