Markets Initially Ignoring Aussie Crop Data

PANAMA - Feb 19/21 - SNS -- Chickpea markets were largely unaffected by the latest production estimates from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES).

The massive increase in the size of that country's chickpea crop was expected. Output is now believed to have jumped from 281,000 metric tons (MT) in 2019 to 755,000 last year, up from November's 737,000 MT estimate.

The country grows mainly desi type chickpeas, but exporters are reporting relatively good buying interest from Pakistan, which is adding support to spot markets for that class.
