PANAMA - Oct 9/20 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets maintained their firm tone through the past week, helped by gains in sunflower values in the United States as crushers and other users compete for new crop deliveries from farmers.
The USDA released its first estimate of sunflower production in the country during the week, raising its seeded area 10% from its June estimate to almost 1.7 million acres.
Land in oil type sunflower is now pegged at 1.483 million acres, compared to 1.197 million last year; while land in confection sunflower came in at 215,500 acres, up from 153,600 last year and the previous five year average of around 193,000 acres.
Production of all classes of sunflower is expected to reach 1.237 million metric tons (MT); compared to 881,536 MT last year and the previous five year average of 1.067 million.
