U.S. Pea Harvest Drops 17%

WASHINGTON - Sep 11/20 - SNS -- Production of all classes of dry edible peas in the United States was pegged at 18.5 million cwt (100 pounds) or just over 180,000 metric tons (MT), according to the latest USDA crop production update.

Though average yields are up over last year, those gains were more than offset by a 9% drop in seeded area, resulting in a 17% decline in production.

Area planted is estimated at 999,000 acres, up 5% from June but down 9% from 2019. Area harvested is forecast at 949,000 acres, up 5% from the June forecast but down 10% from 2019.

The average United States yield is expected to be 1,953 pounds per acre, down 171 pounds from 2019.

In Montana, growing conditions were mostly favorable for peas, despite pockets of drought. Harvest was 92% complete as of the week ending August 30, well ahead of the comparable week from the previous season.

In North Dakota, growing conditions were ideal and harvest was 82% as of the week ending August 30, about the same as the previous season.
