Canadian Chickpea Outlook Cloudy

PANAMA - Sep 4/20 - SNS -- Chickpea markets do not expect this year's production estimate for Canada to stand up because of disease problems with the crop in Saskatchewan and reports of problems with this year's harvest.

Based on remote sensing data, Statistics Canada pegged that harvest at almost 205,000 metric tons (MT) from 297,800 acres, down from 251.500 MT from 391,900 acres last year.

Farmers in south western Saskatchewan are reporting high green counts in some harvested crops, which could affect the proportion of chickpeas grading No 2 Canada or better. Growers in other areas report the same issue along with lower than expected yields and small, shriveled seed in harvested crops.
