Optimism Over Lentil Demand

PANAMA - Jun 19/20 - SNS -- International lentil markets maintained their firm tone through the past week, helped by rapidly dwindling stocks on farms in most northern hemisphere countries and somewhat defensive attitudes toward pricing.

Markets are optimistic both bulk and containerized exports will remain strong through the balance of the season, potentially helped by India's decision to reduce import duties on pulses through the end of August.

The timing suggests India's lentil harvest may have been significantly lower than estimated by the government. Logistical constraints may have also affected supplies available in cities further from the production areas.
