Quiet Week For Chickpeas

PANAMA - May 22/20 - SNS -- Chickpea markets were generally quiet during the past week, with prices for kabuli types little changed, while export markets for desi type continued to weaken in the face of limited demand.

It is clear this year's harvests of kabuli chickpeas will be down from last year, with any gains in production in some eastern European countries more than offset by declines elsewhere.

Argentina now expects this year's chickpea plantings to down significantly from last year because of dry soil conditions. Farmers initially intended to expand area from around 73,000 hectares last year to over 85,000.
