Few Changes in Dry Beans

PANAMA - May 9/20 - SNS -- Dry edible bean markets were unaffected by the apparent decision by Canadian farmers to reduce this year's seeded area.

Statistics Canada said farmers intend to plant 323,800 acres of all classes of beans, down from 398,900 last year. White bean area could drop from 117,900 to 95,800 acres, while land in colored beans sinks from 281,000 to 228,000.

Dry edible bean seedings in eastern Canada are expected to rise slightly. By contrast, farmers in Alberta say they will reduce colored beans area from 62,800 to 52,800 acres, while growers in Manitoba slash colored bean plantings from 120,800 to 78,000 acres and white beans from 47,500 to 31,100.
