Chickpeas Finish Unchanged

PANAMA - May 1/20 - SNS -- Chickpea markets finished the week unchanged, with growers in the northern hemisphere now more focussed on seeding this year's crops than marketing supplies available in their bins.

Processors and exporters in Canada expect growers to shift away from chickpeas into other red lentils and other pulses, while Australian processors worry that interest in cereal grains will pull land from desi chickpeas.

The first glimpse of what may happen in Canada will be contained in the May 7 seeding intentions estimates. On average, farmers plant 22% more chickpeas than they intended. But, some market participants suspect this year's intentions may be higher than what will actually be sown.
