Birdseeds Lose Ground

PANAMA - Mar 20/20 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets finished the week's trading on a generally easier note, with many processors and exporters reported limited short term buying interest.

This was reflected in a steep decline in prices offered to growers for white proso millet seed in the United States and moderate declines in spot and new crop canaryseed bid levels to Canadian farmers.

Oil and confection sunflower seed values, by contrast, were little changed. The U.S. based National Sunflower Association noted, "Overall, sunflower prices have remained strong throughout this winter unlike the negative trend in wheat, corn and soybean values.

"On March 31, the USDA will release important reports that will have an impact on the markets. These include the planting intentions and the quarterly stocks estimates. The planting intentions report will be very important."
