India Nudges Closer to Record Rabi Area

PANAMA - Jan 13/20 - SNS -- India's farmers continue to make above average progress planting this year's rabi season pulse crops, reflecting delays harvesting kharif season crops because of the delayed onset of last year's monsoon.

Land in all pulses totalled 15.126 million hectares for the week ending January 10, up from 14.447 million last year and above the recent average of 14.53 million.

It seems unlikely land in all pulses will break the record 16.91 million hectares sown in 2018. In recent years, farmers planted an average of 951,400 and a recent maximum of 1.178 million hectares through the end of February, suggesting the final area could readily range between 16.1 and 16.3 million hectares.
