Lentils Start 2020 on Strong Note

PANAMA - Jan 12/20 - SNS -- Lentil markets finished the week's trading on a firmer note, helped by solid short term demand and news that the U.S. harvest was down sharply from last year.

The USDA pegged total output at 244,000 metric tons (MT), down from 381,384 in 2018. Despite adverse growing conditions, average yields per seeded acre were up over last year, advancing from 1,078 to 1,107 pounds.

Though residual stocks of lentils were up significantly, available supplies for the 2019-20 marketing campaign total an estimated 469,000 MT, down from 520,384 last season.
