India Again Preoccupies Peas

PANAMA - Dec 23/19 - SNS -- Hopes India would relax import restrictions on peas in 2020 faded in the past week, with the announcement of a 150,000 metric ton (MT) import limit on peas through March 31 and excellent progress seeding this year's rabi season crops.

Food is more political in India than most countries. This was reflected in recent crisis over available supplies of onions and is starting to be reflected in pulse markets because of prices consumers need to pay are rising.

The government is trying to counter this by releasing additional product from its buffer stocks. That generally has a negative effect on prices markets are willing to pay farmers, but helps limit price advances to consumers.
