Canada's Chickpea Crop Exceeds Needs

PANAMA - Dec 6/19 - SNS -- Statistics Canada pegged this year's chickpea harvest at 251,500 metric tons (MT) from 391,900 acres, compared to 311,300 MT from 442,900 acres last year.

Breaking down production by province, Statistics Canada said output in Saskatchewan totalled 224,600 MT from 331,800 acres, compared to 26,900 from 60,100 acres in Alberta.

This year's reduction in production was not enough to change supply fundamentals for the country, though the fact there is a higher than normal percentage of offgrade product moderately reduces available supplies for human consumption markets.
