Modest Firmness in Lentils

PANAMA - Sep 27/19 - SNS -- International lentil markets closed the week's trading on a relatively firm note as processors and exporters in Canada struggle to meet short term shipping commitments.

This year's harvest is making good progress despite wet weather conditions. Saskatchewan's harvest was 88% complete as of September 23, down from 97% last year and the recent five year average of 95% in the bin. Of the balance, half was ready to straight combine and half still standing.

This suggests frost events in the province will not have a significant impact on crop quality, though they should act as a natural desiccant for standing crops. The bigger concern is farmers are struggling to enter fields because of wet conditions, which would be expected to lower seed quality in some fields.
