Kharif Yields Fall Far Short Of Target

DELHI - Sep 12/19 - SNS -- This summer's kharif season field crops are expected to be above the long term average for India, but total food grain output is 5% than the government's target.

Total food grain production is expected to reach 140.57 million MT, 8.44 million above the recent five year average, but below India's 147.9 million MT target.

Rice output is expected to reach 100.35 million MT, compared to 102.13 million last year and the recent average of 93.55 million. Coarse cereal grain output is forecast at 32 million MT, compared to 30.99 million last year and the recent average of 31.3.

India expects its kharif season oilseed crop to total 22.389 million MT, up from 21.277 million last year and the recent average of 20.215 million.

Production of all kharif season pulses expected to reach 8.23 million metric tons (MT), down from 8.52 million last year and 19% below the government target of 10.1 million MT.
