Movement Helps Peas Hold Value

PANAMA - Sep 20/19 - SNS -- International field pea markets finished the weeks trading on a relatively firm note, supported by good movement into export markets.

New crop peas are now readily available in both Canada and the United States. As of September 16, Saskatchewan's harvest was 79% complete, compared to 95% last year and the recent average of 90%. Progress is a little slower in Alberta, while the Manitoba harvest is considered complete.

Assuming Statistics Canada's yield estimates are correct, Canada has around 3.4 million metric tons (MT) of new crop peas available, compared to 3.3 million at the same time last year. Growers have been active sellers, delivering 311,500 MT into the bulk handling system as of September 15, compared to 179,500 MT by the same time last year.

Quality is considered generally good, with initial grade estimates suggesting 89% of the pea crop is No 2 Canada or better, compared to 97% last year. Interestingly, Saskatchewan's crop reporters are less optimistic about lentil quality, thinking 16% will make the No 1 grade, compared to 37% last year, while 55% could be No 2 Canada, up from 51% last year.
