Chickpea Residuals Hit 100,000 MT

PANAMA - Aug 23/19 - SNS -- Statistics Canada pegged this summer's carry over from the previous marketing year at 100,000 metric tons (MT), just above expectations of a 96,000 MT residual supply from the 2018-19 marketing campaign.

Of the total, farmers said they were holding 78,000 MT, compared to just 9,300 last year. Inventories in the hands of processors and the bulk handling system closed the season at 22,000 MT, up from 4,000 last year. Stocks were not broken down by province.

Production estimates for both Canada will be updated on September 12. Markets expect the number to be lower than the August production estimate because of the impact of disease and poor weather conditions on the crop. Even so, most of the impact of will not be known until the final production estimate of the year in December.
