Continued Harvest Delays in Canada

PANAMA - Sep 6/19 - SNS -- Harvesting peas and other pulses in Canada continued to advance at a slower than normal pace during the last week of August, bringing Saskatchewan's harvest to 47% complete, while the harvest in Manitoba is virtually complete and initial activity starting in Alberta.

Last year, Saskatchewan's harvest was 86% complete by the beginning of September, while the recent five year average is 72% in the bin. Frustrating growers was that once fields were almost ready to support their machinery, more rain fell.

The 2010 harvest was similar, with growers only able to harvest 57% of the crop by the beginning of September. It took until the end of the month for the 2010 harvest to be 95% complete and until the middle of October for the field pea harvest to finally wrap up.

By contrast, the harvest was only 10% complete by the beginning of September in 1993, but was completed by the end of the month. In 1992, the harvest started September with 16% of the pea crop in the bin, only to wrap up three weeks later.

Clearly, with weather conditions dominating the outlook for harvest progress, it is impossible to make reasonable estimates of future progress.
