Markets Worry About Lentil Quality, Yields

PANAMA - Aug 23/19 - SNS -- International lentil markets are already discounting Canada's first production estimates for lentils because it is based on estimated yields in fields before the harvest began.

On average, the August crop report is 6% below the final harvest total, ranging between 44% too optimistic in 2013 and 22% in 2015 to 3% below the final number last year and 1% below in 2016.

As of August 19, Saskatchewan's lentil harvest was 5% complete with another 14% ready to straight combine and 5% in swath. When the previous week got underway, 1% had been harvested and 6% was ready to straight combine, with another 1% in swath. If the weather had cooperated, the harvest would have been 8% to 12% complete by the 19th.
