Spain Could Expand Pea Imports

PANAMA - Jul 10/19 - SNS -- Spain will likely need to import substantially more ingredients for livestock feed than was the case last season because of a significant reduction in the expected size of this year's grain harvest.

The U.S. agricultural attache for the country thinks feed ingredient imports could jump from 15 to 17 million MT, reflecting a short domestic crop and rising meat production. Livestock number in Spain have been rising because of growing demand for the country's meat from other European Union member countries.

The country will mainly import grains, but overall demand for peas has been growing as Europe's compound feed sector works to reduce soybean meal usage. This should benefit France and eastern European suppliers because of their proximity, but exporters in Canada could also benefit as long as prices are competitive with other livestock feed ingredients.
