Confusion Among Beaners

PANAMA - Mar 29/19 - SNS -- Dry edible bean markets were confused by last week's seeding intentions report because gables released by the USDA indicated area would be down sharply, instead of posting a modest increase.

Confusion stemmed from the decision to remove chickpeas from the dry edible bean category. This was reflected in the table for this year's seeding intentions, but chickpeas were not removed from the comparison date for prior years.

The USDA has also stopped estimating dry edible bean area for Montana and Texas. Montana has become a minor producing state, but Texas remains an important producer of blackeye cowpeas, making future supply and demand analysis for that class of beans more difficult.
