Chickpeas Surprised by India's Estimates
PANAMA - Mar 1/19 - SNS -- Chickpea markets were surprised by India's first production estimate for the rabi season crop now developing in the country.
Production was forecast at 10.32 million metric tons (MT), down from 11.1 million last year and well above the recent five year average of 8.88 million MT.
Based on a seeded area of 9.658 million hectares, the agriculture department expects farmers will see a record yield of 1,069 kilograms per hectare, compared to 1,031 last year and the average of 922 kilograms.
