Modest Drop In U.S. Lentil Harvest

PANAMA - Feb 11/19 - SNS -- This year's lentil harvest in the United States ended up modestly lower than initially forecast, with the USDA pegging the crop at 381,384 metric tons (MT), down roughly 17,000 tons from its first estimate, but still above last year's 339,381 MT crop.

Though land in lentils dropped sharply from 1.1 million to 780,000 acres, growing conditions were significantly better resulting in an increase in average yields from 678 pounds per seeded acre to 1,078 last year.

Most of the lentils grown in the United States are green and that class is facing more intense competition for available demand on world markets because of surplus production in Canada and other parts of the world.
