WASHINGTON - Feb 8/19 - SNS -- Last year's dry edible bean harvest in the United States was pegged at 37.5 million cwt or 1.7 million metric tons (MT), up 4% from the previous year, according to the USDA's final crop report for 2018.
Including those states which are no longer covered suggests total output is closer to 1.75 million MT for all classes of beans and chickpeas.
Planted area was estimated at 2.08 million acres, down 1% from 2017. Harvested area was estimated at 2.02 million acres, down fractionally from the previous year. The average United States yield was 1,860 pounds per acre, an increase of 82 pounds from 2017 and the third highest on record.
In North Dakota, planting was virtually complete by June 17, ahead of the 5-year average. As of September 30, harvest was 91 complete, well ahead of a normal pace. In Michigan, dry bean planting ended up being slightly behind schedule, not finishing until mid-July. Many growers reported an excellent crop and State yield is a record high.
