India Narrows Pulse Area Gap

PANAMA - Jan 11/19 - SNS -- India's farmers made above average seeding progress during the past week, with land in pulses now totalling 14.791 million hectares, down almost 6% from 15.69 million sown by this time last year but above the recent five year average of 14.88 million hectares sown by January 11.

Planting of all crops is down 4.75% from this time last year, dropping from 61.051 to 58.15 million hectares. Land in oilseeds slipped 1% from 7.875 million hectares last year at 7.797 million this year. Coarse cereals are down 16%, falling from 5.347 to 4.498 million hectares. Rice is down 21% from 2.088 million at 1.657 million hectares, while wheat is down 2.1% from 30.051 million at 29.407 million hectares.

Looking at seeding progress for pulses by class, India's agriculture department said seedings of gram or chickpeas has plunged just over 10% from 10.528 million hectares to 9.461 million.
