Few Changes in Peas

PANAMA - Oct 26/18 - SNS -- International field pea markets were little changed in relatively light trading interest during the past week.

Bulk export movement from Canada continues to lag last year, but the gap is narrowing in the face of ongoing demand from China and other destinations. Last year's bulk exports got off to a strong start as exporters sought to fill shipments to India before that country's government took further steps to limit imports.

India's demand for Canadian product was affected at the start of the 2017-18 marketing year by that government's decision to remove Canada's methyl bromide fumigation exemption three months earlier than for other countries.

While cargo could be imported if it was not fumigated at origin with methyl bromide, importers faced escalating penalties. This resulted in a surge in movement in September as exporters sought to have bills of lading dated before September 30, 2017. Demand was also diminished because importers feared further action by the government to limit pulse imports.
