PANAMA - Sep 14/18 - SNS -- Chickpea markets remained relatively steady during the past week, though growers and processors appear somewhat anxious to move small and medium caliber product.

Markets were not helped by indications land in chickpeas in the United States could be higher than estimated by the USDA's NASS. Farmers reporting to the Farm Service Agency (FSA), said they planted a total of 853,146 acres of chickpeas this year, compared to NASS estimate of 822,000.

Breaking down area by class, the FSA said there 632,482 acres of large kabuli chickpeas; 209,338 acres of small kabuli chickpeas; and 11,326 acres of desi chickpeas were sown this year.
