WASHINGTON - Sep 13/18 - SNS -- U.S. rice production is forecast at 219 million cwt (100 pound units), up 4% from the August forecast and up 23% from 2017, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.
Based on a thorough review of all available data, planted area is now estimated at 2.94 million acres, up 4% from the June estimate and up 19% from last year. Area for harvest is expected to total 2.90 million acres, up 4% from the August forecast and up 22% from last year.
Based on conditions as of September 1, the average United States yield is forecast at 7,563 pounds per acre, up 40 pounds per acre from the August forecast and 56 pounds per acre higher than the 2017 average yield of 7,507 pounds per acre.
