Smaller U.S. Field Pea Crops

WASHINGTON - Sep 13/18 - SNS -- Field pea production in the United States is down 2% over last year at just over 629,000 metric tons (MT), according to the USDA's first production estimate for the crop.

Planted area, at 865,000 acres, and harvested area, at 824,500 acres, decreased by 23% and 22%, respectively. The average United States yield is expected to be 1,683 pounds per harvested acre, up 333 pounds from 2017, or 1,604 pounds per seeded acre.

The USDA notes that plantings began late in Montana as spring precipitation persisted and many fields had standing water until the final week of May. The crop was 96% planted by the week ending June 3. By the week ending September 2, the crop was 49% harvested, compared with 85% last year. In North Dakota, 97% of the crop was harvested by September 2, ahead of last year's pace of 91%.
