Lentils Ease As Harvest Starts

PANAMA - Aug 3/18 - SNS -- International lentil markets finished the week's trading on an easier note, reflecting some harvest selling pressure in North America.

The week started with 4% of Montana's lentil crop in the bin and around 1% of Canada's crop. State reports for North Dakota and the U.S. Pacific Northwest did not indicate how many lentils have been harvested, but this year's pea harvest is advancing rapidly in both regions.

Markets also got their first concrete indication of the quantity of lentils which were carried over into the current marketing year. Commercial stocks in the bulk handling system on July 31 totalled 147,700 metric tons (MT), compared to 84,300 MT last year.
