Almond Harvest Rises 8%

WASHINGTON - Jul 12/18 - SNS -- The 2018 California almond production (shelled basis) is forecast at 2.45 billion pounds, up 7% from the previous forecast and 8% above the previous year, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

The almond bloom began earlier than normal this year and was extended due to cold temperatures. Frosts during bloom negatively impacted orchards, with younger trees affected more severely than older trees. Weather during the spring was variable. As temperatures warmed up in May, nuts were sizing well. Reports of disease pressure in almonds remained light. The July forecast is based on the almond objective measurement survey.
