9% Bigger Barley Crop

WASHINGTON - Jul 12/18 - SNS -- This year's barley crop in the United States should reach 155 million bushels, up 9% from 2017, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

Based on conditions as of July 1, the average yield for the United States is forecast at 75.6 bushels per acre, up 3.0 bushels from last year. Record high yields are forecast in Minnesota and Montana. Area harvested for grain or seed, at 2.05 million acres, is unchanged from the Acreage report released on June 29, 2018, but up 5% from 2017.

Rouhgly 97% of the Nation's barley acreage was planted by June 3, one percentage point behind last year but 2 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. By June 10, 92% of the barley acreage had emerged, 2 percentage points ahead of both last year and the 5-year average. Half the barley acreage was headed by July 1, two percentage points ahead of last year but 1 percentage point behind the 5-year average. On July 1, 84% of the Nation's barley acreage was rated in good to excellent condition, 32 percentage points above the same time last year.
