Lentil Area Remains High

PANAMA - Jun 29/18 - SNS -- Canadian farmers planted fewer lentils than intended, but the drop was not as big as expected, with Statistics Canada pegged area at 3.77 million acres, down from 4.4 million last year and below the intended 4.05 million.

It is important to stress that the reduction does not mean the seeding intentions were wrong. It simply means growers likely responded to weakening prices after the intentions survey by adjusting what to sown to fields where they had a choice.

If yields are average and the survey was accurate, production would be only slip from last year's 2.559 million metric ton (MT) harvest to 2.495 million this year.
