Record North American Chickpea Output

PANAMA - Jun 29/18 - SNS -- Land in chickpeas in Canada and the United States ended up higher than this year's seeding intentions, with Canadian farmers saying they planted more while farmers in the United States just missed their intentions.

Chickpea seedings in the United States ended up at 662,300 acres, just below the intended 665,000. Areas sown to small chickpeas ended up at 205,000 acres, compared to 179,500 last year; while large kabuli chickpea plantings jumped from 439,300 to 457,300 acres. Interestingly, farmers said they planted more small and fewer large chickpeas than intended.

By contrast, area in Canada jumped from an intended 346,200 to 468,900 acres. Unofficial Statistics Canada data suggests Canada planted 13,8000 acres of desi, 445,900 acres of kabuli and 9,200 acres of other types such as B-90.
