U.S. Canola Slips 1%

WASHINGTON - Jun 29/18 - SNS -- U.S. producers planted 2.05 million acres in 2018, just 1% below last year's record high planted area, according to the USDA's seeded area estimates for this year.

Compared with last year, planted area is expected to decline in 5 of the 8 major canola-producing States, with the largest decline occurring in Oklahoma, where planted area is down 56% from 2017. Planted area in North Dakota, the leading canola-producing State, is up 4% from last year, and acreage in Idaho more than doubled from 2017. The harvested area for the Nation is forecast at a record high 2.02 million acres, an increase of 1% from last year.

Planted area in Idaho, North Dakota, and Washington are record highs and the area forecast for harvest in Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota will be record highs, if realized.

Canadian farmers reported a similar decrease to that in the United States, with area slipping 1.1% to 22.7 million acres. The overall decline in canola area was the result of reduced areas in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The seeded area reported by Saskatchewan farmers was down 3.5% from 2017 to 12.3 million acres. In Alberta, producers sowed 6.8 million acres (-1.7%). Meanwhile, in Manitoba, producers reported that their area seeded to canola increased 8.1% in 2018 to 3.4 million acres, potentially at the expense of soybean acreage that decreased this year.
