Australia Expects Steep Pulse Output Drop

SYDNEY - Jun 13/18 - SNS -- Australia's first seeded area and production estimates for the year had a friendly undertone, with total pulse area expected to drop from 2.61 to 1.81 million hectares and production from 2.9 to 2.67 million metric tons (MT).

Despite a dry summer, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) said timely rainfall in May in most cropping regions in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales facilitated sowing of winter crops in these regions.

"However, seasonal conditions in most cropping regions in Queensland and northern New South Wales were drier than average throughout autumn, which significantly constrained planting intentions. With lower layer soil moisture at the end of autumn below to very much below average across most cropping regions in Australia, sufficient and timely winter rainfall will be critically important for crop development," ABARES added.
